The Voigtlander Heliar 40 mm f/2.8 is a compact semi-wide-angle lens. Developed using traditional Heliar design and the latest optical technology for extremely precise imaging.
40 mm
The lens’ focal length of 40 mm is the golden mean between wide-seeing and telephoto lenses. The slightly wider angle compared to standard 50mm will find use in filming and street and reportage photography. Its natural imaging character will capture both stunning portrait shots and breathtaking landscapes.
Heliar design
The optical system of the lens is derived from the classic Heliar design consisting of 5 elements arranged in 3 groups. An aspherical element is placed in the centre of the system, which significantly affects the image quality generated by the lens. The Heliar 40 mm f/2.8 is characterised by very good chromatic aberration correction, high microcontrast and edge-to-edge sharpness already from the fully open aperture.
Light under control
A perfectly functioning ten-blade aperture allows you to control the amount of light transmitted. The lens offers an adjustable setting range from f/2.8 to f/22, providing freedom when working with depth of field. The minimum focusing distance on Leica M-mount bodies is 70 cm.
Quality in a compact design
Voigtlander lenses are renowned for their superior build quality. This is no different with the Heliar 40 mm f/2.8. Despite its miniature size, the entire lens barrel is made of metal, so it will maintain its accuracy for many years. The focus ring moves smoothly, but with the necessary resistance for precise operation. For more comfortable handling, the lens is equipped with an ergonomic pusher, which is also a helicoid movement lock.
Bagnet Leica M
The lens is equipped with a Leica M bayonet, designed for Leica and Voigtlander rangefinder cameras. Using the appropriate bayonet adapter, it can be mounted on any Canon R, Fuxjilim X, Nikon Z, Sony E or Micro 4/3 mirrorless camera. The lens covers the entire 35mm format frame with its image, as well as with slight vignetting the medium format sensors of Fujifilm and Hasselblad cameras. The silver version of the lens is compatible with the 6-bit system of Leica cameras, allowing them to recognise their mounted lenses. On these cameras, the 50mm lens frame will be displayed when the Heliar is mounted.
