Choosing Rangefinder Lenses for Leica M Cameras

Rangefinder lenses are specifically crafted for Leica’s M-type camera mount, though several other manufacturers also produce lenses and cameras for this system.

What Are Leica M-Mount Lenses?

Leica introduced the M-mount for 35mm lenses in 1954 with the M3 camera. This mount features a quick-release bayonet fitting and is compatible with both Leica’s 35mm and digital rangefinder cameras. Unlike other brands that incorporate electronic controls, Leica maintains an all-mechanical design, with manual aperture rings and focusing—traits usually found only in digital cinema lenses. This compatibility means you can pair almost any M-mount lens with any M-mount camera, allowing for a versatile mix of new and vintage equipment.

Characteristics of M-Mount Lenses

The compact design of Leica cameras means the distance between the lens mount and sensor is minimal, resulting in small, lightweight lenses with outstanding optical quality. Leica rangefinders use a prism system in the viewfinder for precise focusing, activated by a cam on the lens. Made of metal and high-quality glass, Leica lenses deliver excellent performance. Zeiss and Voigtlander also offer lenses that fit this mount, providing quality alternatives that are generally less expensive. Other manufacturers produce compatible lenses, including some for special effects.

Camera Compensation for Different Focal Lengths

Rangefinder cameras feature optical viewfinders with fixed magnification. When you change the lens’s focal length, the camera adjusts to maintain correct framing. This is achieved in three ways. First, digital rangefinders use LED lens frames in the viewfinder, activated by a six-bit barcode on the lens. Second, lens information can be manually inputted. Since lens frames don’t cover all focal lengths, specific viewfinders matching particular focal lengths can be attached to the camera’s hot shoe. Finally, cameras with live view screens allow for focusing and composition directly on the screen.

Fitting Rangefinder Camera Lenses to Other Cameras

The similar lens-flange-to-sensor distance of many mirrorless cameras means adapters can be used to fit rangefinder lenses on systems like Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic, including Sony’s full-frame E-mount cameras. Adapters are also available for M-mount lenses to fit on L-mount cameras from Leica, Sigma, and Panasonic. Additionally, adapters can enable various other lenses to be used on Leica M-mount cameras.
