Function of Lens Hoods

Also known as lens hoods or lens shutters, they keep out the light that would otherwise enter the lens from outside the angle of view. This prevents unnecessary light from being diffusely or directionally reflected from the lens surfaces and edges inside the lens barrel and camera body. Because such stray light obscures the image or overlays it with light spots and ghost images, it worsens the contrast.

Lens hoods can therefore make a significant contribution to improving image quality, especially when the light is coming in at an angle from the front and when the subject is very bright outside the image section. The lens hood is an important accessory for better images and should always be used.
