Extension tubes, also known as spacer rings, increase the distance between the camera's image sensor and the rear element of the lens. This reduces the minimum focusing distance of the lens, allowing you to focus closer to your subject and capture larger images, ideal for macro photography and detailed close-ups.

Technical Details and Magnification Calculation

The magnification factor with an extension tube can be calculated as:

Maximum magnification with spacer ring = lens magnification factor + (mm spacer ring / focal length)

For example, with an 85mm lens having a base magnification of 0.13:

• With 12mm tube: 0.13 + (12 / 85) = 0.22
• With 20mm tube: 0.13 + (20 / 85) = 0.37
• With 36mm tube: 0.13 + (36 / 85) = 0.55
• Combined 68mm tubes: 0.13 + (68 / 85) = 0.93

Note: Using all three tubes stacked results in approximately 2 stops of light loss.
