Variable Light Control with Polarizing Layers

The Kenko PL Fader filter incorporates two polarizing layers to precisely control the amount of light passing through the filter into the camera lens. At its minimum setting, the filter allows 1/3 of the light to pass, equivalent to a 1.5-stop reduction in aperture or shutter speed. At its maximum setting, it reduces light transmission to just 1/400, corresponding to a 9-stop reduction.

Adjustable Light Reduction for Creative Photography

Once mounted on the lens, rotating the filter ring between the "Min" and "Max" positions enables significant control over light entering the lens. This flexibility allows photographers to use fast lenses, such as a 50mm f/1.4, wide open at f/1.4 even in bright sunlight, achieving a very shallow depth of field.

Alternatively, the filter can slow shutter speeds to several seconds in full sunlight, facilitating artistic motion blur effects on subjects like flowing water, moving vehicles, or people. This capability expands creative possibilities for both photography and videography.
