Optical design
The Vixen SD103SII is a 103 mm apochromatic refractor optical tube assembly (OTA) featuring high-performance Super-ED (SD) glass. Its compact length and low weight make it suitable for mobile use. The two-element, multi-coated objective uses FPL53 glass to bring violet, red, blue, yellow and green light to a common focal plane, reducing residual chromatic aberration and producing clear, sharp, colour-neutral images.
The SD103SII objective no longer uses spacer plates. This improves image quality, particularly when observing bright stars, and prevents the diffraction spikes that spacer plates can produce in astrophotographs. The telescope is also suited to high-contrast lunar and planetary observation, including fine lunar craters, Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s cloud bands. Brighter deep-sky objects, such as the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy, can also be observed in detail.
Imaging and connections
With the optional SD Reducer HD Kit or SD Flattener HD, the refractor can illuminate a 44 mm image circle for full-frame SLR cameras. New internal baffle rings optimise the SD series for full-frame imaging. The 60 mm eyepiece extension supports heavy cameras while helping prevent tilt. The supplied folding mirror enables straight-through or 90° viewing and includes a T2 thread for connecting a DSLR camera. Photography is supported at prime focus and by eyepiece projection.
