There are two common ways to reduce excess light: by closing the lens aperture and shortening the exposure time. However, this does not eliminate reflected and scattered rays, which are everywhere on a clear day. Closing the aperture can diminish the artistic quality of the photograph, making it difficult to emphasize the desired subject and separate it from a blurred background. A very short exposure time can rob moving objects of their smoothness and naturalness.
A neutral density filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens, allowing you to shoot with a wide aperture and normal or long exposure times.
Neutral density filters are essential for shooting in bright conditions, such as in the mountains, on the beach, or on a clear summer day. They are often necessary for studio portrait photography and are particularly invaluable for videography.
The Hoya 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of about 1.5 to 9 stops. The 0.45 to 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than would normally be required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
This filter is constructed from optical glass to maintain image clarity and is set within a slim profile aluminum ring, which helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting when used on wide-angle lenses, and does not feature front threads.
Be aware that when the filter is attached to the lens, the lens cap size becomes one size bigger. So if your lens has a filter thread size of 82mm, you will require an 82mm lens cap. The widened front filter frame has been designed on purpose to avoid vignetting.
