The Venus Optics Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL is the widest non-fisheye lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras with the Leica L mount. It offers an ultra-wide 135° angle of view with minimal distortion, enabling unique and expansive photographic perspectives.
Advanced Optical Design
The lens features a sophisticated optical construction of 14 elements in 10 groups, including two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion glass elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortion. A high refractive index glass element further enhances image quality. The aperture consists of five blades and can be stopped down to f/22.
Close Focusing Capability
With a minimum focusing distance of 12 cm, this lens allows for close-up photography with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.21x, offering creative opportunities for macro and multi-plane compositions with a distinctive perspective.
Starburst Effect
When the aperture is stopped down, the lens produces aesthetically pleasing 10-point star effects around bright light sources such as the sun, street lamps, or decorative lights.
Applications
The 135° field of view exaggerates the relative size of foreground objects, creating an impression of vast space. This makes the lens ideal for interior, architectural, and landscape photography.
Filter Compatibility
Due to the convex front element and built-in tulip-shaped lens hood, front-mounted filters are not directly attachable. However, a dedicated magnetic adapter (sold separately) allows the use of standard 100 mm wide rectangular filters, accommodating UV and ND filters for photographers and filmmakers.
Manual Operation and Build Quality
The lens offers precise manual focusing with a smooth, well-damped focus ring marked with distance scales in meters and feet. A Focus Tab provides additional tactile feedback for accurate focus control. Aperture is adjusted via a separate ring with distinct clicks at full stops, allowing smooth intermediate adjustments.
The lens body is constructed from solid black metal with meticulous finishing, combining durability with classic elegance.
