The Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital ED 17mm F1.2 PRO is a premium wide-angle prime lens designed for Micro Four Thirds system cameras, offering a 34mm equivalent focal length in 35mm format. It is part of Olympus's F1.2 PRO series, delivering outstanding resolution and beautiful feathered bokeh at a maximum aperture of f/1.2.
Optical Design and Image Quality
- Constructed with 15 elements in 11 groups, including the newly developed ED-DSA lens element that combines Extra-low Dispersion (ED) and Dual Super Aspherical (DSA) characteristics.
- The ED-DSA element effectively compensates for chromatic aberrations, distortion, and color bleeding on the image periphery, common issues in wide-angle lenses.
- Features Z Coating Nano technology to significantly reduce ghosts and flares, ensuring sharp and clear image quality even in backlit conditions.
- Produces feathered bokeh with an ultra-smooth transition from sharp to defocused areas, enhancing subject dimensionality and separation from the background.
Autofocus and Handling
- Equipped with MSC (Movie- and Still-Compatible) autofocus mechanism for virtually silent, smooth, and high-speed focusing performance at the wide f/1.2 aperture.
- Supports On-Chip AF system with no AF point limitations at maximum aperture on Olympus OM-D and PEN cameras.
- Compatible with Face Priority and Eye Priority AF modes, ideal for portrait photography.
- Features a front-positioned focusing ring for easier manual focus control, especially when paired with cameras like the OM-D E-M1 Mark II.
- Includes an MF Clutch mechanism allowing instant switching between autofocus and manual focus by pulling the focusing ring toward the camera body.
Build and Durability
- Compact and lightweight construction consistent with the M.ZUIKO PRO series, enhancing mobility for professional use.
- Weather-sealed design that is dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof down to -10°C (14°F), suitable for challenging shooting environments.
- Uniform 62mm filter diameter compatible with other F1.2 PRO lenses, allowing use of the same filters such as protection and polarizing filters.
Close-Up Performance
- Minimum focusing distance of 20 cm with a maximum image magnification of 0.15x (equivalent to 0.3x in 35mm format), enabling excellent close-up shooting capabilities.
