Versatile standard zoom for APS-C cameras
The Tamron 16–50mm F/2.8 A is a standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras, covering a useful range of subjects. At 16mm, its wide-angle perspective suits landscapes, cityscapes, interiors, architecture and group photography. The natural perspective across the zoom range also works well for street photography, travel and everyday scenes, while the 50mm end provides a narrower field of view for portraits, details and more selective compositions.
Its broad range makes it a practical everyday lens when carrying several lenses is unnecessary or inconvenient. It is particularly useful for travel, where subjects can quickly change from a landscape or building to people, food, street scenes or smaller details. On Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X cameras, the 16–50mm range provides an angle of view equivalent to approximately 24–75mm on full frame. On Canon RF APS-C cameras, the equivalent range is approximately 25.6–80mm.
Constant F/2.8 aperture
The maximum aperture remains F/2.8 throughout the zoom range, unlike that of many compact standard zoom lenses. This provides greater control over depth of field and helps separate a subject from the background. The bright aperture also allows faster shutter speeds in lower light, making the lens useful indoors, in the evening and when photographing moving subjects. Exposure and depth-of-field characteristics remain more consistent when changing focal length.
Compact design
Despite its constant F/2.8 aperture, the lens is designed for portability. The Sony E-mount version is 79.6mm long, weighs 305g and accepts compact 55mm filters. The Nikon Z version weighs 315g, while the Fujifilm X and Canon RF versions weigh 305g. Its useful zoom range, bright aperture and low weight make it a good match for compact APS-C camera systems and for photographers who want to keep everyday or travel equipment light.
Fast VXD autofocus
Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor mechanism, designed for fast, precise focusing and subject tracking. It can track subjects with less predictable movement, such as children and pets. Quiet focusing also makes the lens suitable for hybrid use, switching between still photography and video.
Close focusing
Close-focusing capability adds versatility beyond that of a typical everyday zoom. At 16mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.15m, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. At 50mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.29m, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8. This allows you to get close to food, objects, flowers and everyday details. At the wide end, more of the surroundings can remain in the frame; at longer focal lengths, you can create a tighter composition.
Optical construction
The optical design comprises 14 elements in 10 groups. A seven-blade circular diaphragm helps produce smooth out-of-focus areas when shooting at F/2.8 and at close distances. The minimum aperture is F/16.
Designed for regular use
Moisture-resistant construction provides additional protection when shooting outdoors. A fluorine coating on the front element helps protect its surface and makes fingerprints, moisture and dirt easier to remove. The front lens cap also has a strap hole for convenient attachment and handling during work. These features form part of Tamron’s updated Toned Profile Next lens design.
