Versatile standard zoom for APS-C
The Tamron 16-50mm F/2.8 A is a standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras, designed for a wide range of subjects. Its 16mm wide-angle setting is useful for landscapes, city scenes, interiors, architecture and group photographs. Across the zoom range, it offers a natural perspective for street photography, travel and everyday scenes, while the 50mm setting provides a narrower field of view for portraits, details and more selective compositions.
With a useful zoom range, a fast aperture and a compact design, the lens is well suited to everyday use and travel when carrying several lenses is impractical. On Nikon Z APS-C cameras, its 16–50mm range provides an angle of view equivalent to approximately 24–75mm on a full-frame camera.
Constant F/2.8 aperture
The maximum aperture remains F/2.8 throughout the zoom range. This provides greater control over depth of field and helps separate subjects from the background. The fast aperture also makes it easier to use shorter shutter speeds in low light, making the lens useful indoors, in the evening and when photographing moving subjects. Exposure and depth-of-field characteristics remain consistent as you change focal length.
Compact design
Despite its constant F/2.8 aperture, the lens is designed for portability. The Nikon Z version weighs 315g. Its practical zoom range and low weight make it a suitable match for compact APS-C camera systems and for photographers who want to keep everyday or travel equipment lightweight.
Fast VXD autofocus
Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor mechanism, designed for fast, precise focusing and subject tracking, including subjects with less predictable movement, such as children and pets. Quiet focusing also makes the lens suitable for hybrid use, switching between still photography and video.
Close focusing
Close-focusing capability adds versatility beyond that of a typical standard zoom. At 16mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.15m and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:4.5. At 50mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.29m and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:4.8. This lets you photograph food, objects, flowers and everyday details at close range. At the wide end, you can include some of the surroundings; at longer focal lengths, you can create a more tightly framed composition.
Optical design
The optical construction comprises 14 elements in 10 groups. A seven-blade circular diaphragm helps produce smooth out-of-focus areas when shooting at F/2.8 and close range. The minimum aperture is F/16.
Designed for regular use
The moisture-resistant construction provides additional protection when shooting outdoors. A fluorine coating on the front element helps protect its surface and makes fingerprints, moisture and dirt easier to remove. The front cap also has a strap hole for convenient attachment and handling. These features form part of Tamron’s updated Toned Profile Next lens design.
