Leave complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium apps, and computerized mounts behind. With StarSense Explorer, locating celestial objects is easier, faster, and more accurate. Within minutes of setup, navigate the sky confidently by placing your phone in the unique StarSense dock and launching the StarSense Explorer app.
After a quick alignment of your phone to the telescope's optics, the app generates a list of currently visible celestial objects. Select an object and follow on-screen arrows guiding your telescope movement. When the target is centered in the eyepiece, the bullseye turns green. The app provides hundreds of audio descriptions and detailed information on thousands of objects.
High-Quality Altazimuth Base
The ultra-stable Dobsonian base features large diameter altitude bearings with variable tensioning, Teflon azimuth bearings, and reinforced side panel braces for extra stability. The altitude bearings enable smooth vertical motion, while the integrated altitude brake system allows tension adjustment for smooth movement even with slight imbalances. An ergonomic panning knob on the telescope tube allows precise pointing without introducing heat into the optics. Easily follow celestial objects drifting across the sky with minor telescope adjustments.
Dazzling Views with High-Quality Optics
The 12" Newtonian reflector optical tube gathers ample light to reveal impressive celestial details. Expect sharp, bright views of Jupiter's Galilean moons, cloud bands, and Great Red Spot; Saturn's rings; the Orion Nebula's gaseous glow; dust lanes in the Lagoon Nebula; and the Andromeda Galaxy. Compared to smaller StarSense Explorer Dobsonians, the 12" model gathers 2.25 times more light than the 8" and 10" versions, enhancing views of faint objects.
All mirrors feature XLT optical coatings to increase contrast and light throughput for brighter, more detailed views. The low-expansion optical glass mirrors maintain image quality under changing environmental conditions.
The telescope includes a high-quality 2" Crayford focuser providing precise, smooth focusing without shift. It comes with a 2" to 1.25" adapter and a 2" extension tube, compatible with most 1.25" or 2" eyepieces. A thumbscrew locks in sharp focus.
Perfect for City or Dark Sky Observing
Even in light-polluted urban areas, the StarSense Explorer 12" Dobsonian easily reveals Jupiter, Saturn, bright star clusters like the Pleiades, double stars such as Alberio, the Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, and other bright celestial objects.
In darker skies, hundreds of additional fascinating objects become visible. The telescope is easy to transport with ergonomic carry handles at the tube and base balance points. Dust covers are included for the tube front and focuser.

Compatible with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and newer, and Android devices running 7.1.2 or later manufactured since 2016.
Patented StarSense Sky Recognition Technology
StarSense Explorer uses patented technology and your smartphone to determine the telescope's exact pointing in the night sky. The Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA) matches star patterns overhead to an internal database, providing superior accuracy compared to apps relying solely on phone gyros and accelerometers. This technology accurately indicates when your target is visible in the eyepiece.
Enhance Your Setup
Optional accessories include the PowerTank Glow 5000, a 2-in-1 red flashlight and USB power bank designed to keep your phone charged during observation sessions. It mounts conveniently on the StarSense dock.
The USB Cooling Fan for Dobsonian Telescopes helps cool the primary mirror to ambient temperature faster, improving image quality and reducing wait time. It mounts on the rear cell and operates from any USB power source.
