Connect, Launch, Explore
Forget complicated star charts, inaccurate planetarium apps, and computerized mounts. Finding objects with the StarSense Explorer has never been easier, faster, or more accurate. Within minutes of setting up your telescope, you can confidently navigate the night sky. Simply insert your smartphone into the unique StarSense dock and launch the StarSense Explorer app. After aligning your phone with the telescope optics (a quick 2-minute procedure), the app generates a list of currently visible celestial objects. Select an object, and arrows on the screen guide you to move the telescope. When the target is ready for viewing, the target marker turns green.
Smartphone Compatibility
StarSense Explorer works with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and newer models, as well as most Android devices running version 7.1.2 or later and manufactured since 2016.
Patented StarSense Sky Recognition Technology
StarSense Explorer uses patented technology and your smartphone to precisely determine where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. The Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), similar to those used by satellites in orbit for orientation, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead with its internal database.
While other astronomy apps rely solely on phone gyroscopes and accelerometers, which are less accurate, LISA technology ensures precise identification of when your target is visible in the eyepiece.
High-Quality Altazimuth Mount with Slow-Motion Controls
The ultra-stable altazimuth mount provides a solid foundation for the StarSense Explorer DX. Smooth sliding clutches and slow-motion controls on both axes allow you to move the telescope smoothly and accurately lock onto targets. As celestial objects appear to drift across the night sky, you can track them simply by turning the knobs. Everything is mounted on an adjustable full-height tripod.
Exciting Views with High-Quality Optics
With a large 102 mm (4") objective lens, this telescope gathers enough light to reveal impressive details of celestial bodies. Expect sharp, bright views of Jupiter's four Galilean moons, its cloud bands, and the Great Red Spot; Saturn's rings; the trapezium in the Orion Nebula; and the beautiful Pleiades open star cluster. Celestron's XLT optical coatings enhance light transmission, making views even clearer. The telescope also includes a 90-degree erect image diagonal, allowing daytime use for birdwatching, wildlife observation, landscapes, and other terrestrial objects.
Ideal for City or Dark Sky Locations
Even if you live in a city with light pollution, the StarSense Explorer is advanced enough to locate Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Orion Nebula, double stars, and several other famous celestial objects.
For darker skies, more objects become visible. With this 4-inch refractor and relatively dark skies, the Andromeda Galaxy, Hercules open star cluster, and many other objects are easily accessible.
The entire telescope kit weighs only 6.45 kg, making it portable and easy to take on camping trips or to remote observing sites.
- Use your smartphone's capabilities to tour the night sky—no prior telescope experience required.
- Award-winning and patented StarSense sky recognition technology uses your smartphone to analyze star patterns overhead and calculate their real-time positions.
- StarSense Explorer powered by the SkySafari™ app automatically generates a list of currently visible objects. From the city, view planets, brighter nebulae and galaxies, star clusters, and double stars. Or take the telescope to darker locations to observe faint deep-sky objects.
- Manual altazimuth mount with smooth dual-axis slow-motion controls lets you easily follow on-screen arrows to your target. When the target marker turns green, the telescope eyepiece is ready for viewing.
- 102 mm (4") refractor with high-transmission XLT optical coatings and sufficient light-gathering power to view all the best celestial objects.
- Includes 25 mm and 10 mm eyepieces, StarSense smartphone dock, erect image diagonal, red dot finder (for use without the phone), and a sturdy full-height tripod.
