Samyang introduces the VDSLR MK2 lineup, a series of cine lenses enhanced with weather sealing, dual-sided focal length markings, a sleek matte black design, and 9 aperture blades. This series inherits Samyang's renowned cinematic video quality, designed to support independent filmmakers and low-budget projects as an accessible first cine lens set.
Available Focal Lengths and Compatibility
The VDSLR MK2 series launches with five focal lengths: 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm. These focal lengths cover essential angles for creative and commercial video projects. All lenses are fully compatible with six camera mounts: Canon EF, Sony E, Nikon F, Canon M, Fuji X, and Micro Four Thirds (MFT), making them suitable for both DSLR and mirrorless camera systems worldwide.
Compact Design and Ergonomics
Despite their compact size, these lenses are optimized for handheld and gimbal shooting. For example, the 50mm T1.5 MK2 lens measures only 7.47 cm in length and weighs 526 grams, featuring de-clicked aperture and focus gear rings. The long focus throw of over 130° allows precise manual focusing, providing a professional video feel superior to autofocus photo lenses.
Optical Performance
The VDSLR MK2 lenses cover full-frame sensors (36x24 mm) and maintain high image quality. Each lens incorporates aspherical elements to reduce spherical and optical aberrations, delivering clear and vibrant images. The 50mm model includes a hybrid aspherical element to keep the lens compact without sacrificing optical performance.
Aperture and Image Effects
All lenses in the series feature a fast T1.5 aperture, enabling excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field to isolate subjects and add depth to storytelling. The updated 9-blade aperture design produces smooth, circular bokeh with a pleasing three-dimensional quality. Additionally, stopping down the aperture creates 18-ray starburst highlights for creative effects.
Weather Sealing and Build Quality
The MK2 series introduces weather sealing at the lens-to-camera mount interface, protecting against dust, light rain, and snow. This feature allows filmmakers to shoot in challenging environmental conditions. The lenses have a sturdy yet lightweight construction with a professional matte black finish. Distance scales and focal length markings are printed on both sides for easy reading by focus pullers and assistant cinematographers.
