Polarizing Filter Functionality

Light rays that are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters select which light rays enter the camera lens, removing unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass, and saturating colors to provide better contrast. The effect is visible through the viewfinder and can be adjusted by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies depending on the rotation and orientation relative to the sun.

Applications

Ideal for outdoor photography such as mountain or beach scenes, this filter enhances cloud contrast, saturates ocean colors, and controls reflections on water surfaces. It is also effective when shooting through glass or windows by increasing or decreasing reflections. For black and white photography, pairing with a red filter can simulate a threatening storm effect.

Hoya HRT Circular Polarizing Filter Features

The Hoya HRT circular polarizing filter features a unique High Rate Transmission (HRT) film that allows more visible light to pass through while maintaining the same degree of polarization. This results in approximately 1/3 stop more light intake without reducing polarization effectiveness, benefiting digital and HD camera technologies. The HRT film is also used in modern HD LCD TVs. The filter glass includes UV absorbing properties, making it a combined UV and circular polarizing filter.
