It features a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 across the entire zoom range, enabling excellent low-light performance and depth of field control.
The lens construction includes 16 elements in 10 groups, incorporating specialized optical elements such as one aspherical, one high refractive index, five extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, and super ED elements. These elements work together to minimize aberrations and distortion, delivering outstanding image clarity and edge-to-edge resolution. The lens also employs the Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical (ZERO) coating, a thin vacuum-deposited coating that reduces reflections, ghosts, and flares, ensuring high contrast and clear images even in challenging lighting conditions.
Focusing System
The lens utilizes a world-first Dual Voice Coil Motor (Dual VCM) autofocus system, which drives two separate lens groups simultaneously with independent linear motors. This design enables fast, accurate, nearly friction-free, and quiet autofocus performance suitable for both still photography and video recording. The floating focusing mechanism allows a minimum focusing distance of 70 cm (27.6 inches) from the image sensor, providing a maximum magnification of 0.42x for close-up shooting at all focal lengths.
Build and Handling
Constructed with premium metal materials, the lens is compact and lightweight, weighing approximately 880 grams including the tripod collar, which is significantly lighter than comparable full-frame DSLR telephoto zoom lenses. The lens body is hermetically sealed in 11 places, offering splash-, dust-, and freeze-resistance down to -10°C, making it suitable for professional use in harsh environments.
The lens features an inner zoom mechanism that maintains a constant lens length during zooming, contributing to a stable shooting platform. It includes a manual focus clutch for quick switching between autofocus and manual focus modes, and an L-Fn (function) button that can be programmed for frequently used settings such as autofocus pause.
