Combined Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer Filter

The 77mm ND16 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 1.2 and Circular Polarizer Filter from PolarPro integrates a solid neutral density effect with a circular polarizer effect. It provides a 16x filter factor, resulting in a 4-stop exposure reduction. The 1.2 density darkens the entire image, enabling photography with wider apertures or slower shutter speeds than normally possible. This allows greater control over depth of field and the ability to convey motion more effectively.

Polarizing Effect and Image Enhancement

This filter reduces reflections and glare by filtering out polarized light caused by reflections from non-metallic surfaces. Sunlight naturally becomes partially polarized when reflecting off air molecules, creating haze. The polarizing filter arranges and filters this polarized light perpendicularly to reflected light, absorbing much of it. This results in reduced glare and reflections, clearer distant landscapes, and increased saturation of skies and foliage.

The circular polarizer differs from a linear polarizer by including a quarter wave plate, which circularly polarizes the linearly polarized light. This feature ensures compatibility with autofocus and auto exposure functions, which can be disrupted by linear polarizers.

Durability and Construction

The filter is constructed from durable quartz glass. It features 16 layers of anti-reflection coatings that prevent internal ghosting and reflections, enhance clarity, and maintain color fidelity. These coatings also improve water and oil beading, facilitating easier cleaning.

The quartz glass is mounted in a brass filter ring with knurled sides for a secure grip. The ring can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. The brass construction prevents jamming and adds strength, making mounting and removal easier.
