Sensor and Image Processing
The Sony α7S III features a new 12.1-megapixel full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor that delivers exceptional light gathering, reduced rolling shutter, and a wide 15-stop dynamic range. The sensor supports focal-plane phase-detection autofocus for precise subject tracking.
Paired with the revolutionary BIONZ XR image processing engine, the camera offers up to eight times the processing power of previous models, enabling faster image processing, improved color reproduction, and reduced rolling shutter effects.
Video Capabilities
This camera excels in video performance, offering UHD 4K recording at up to 120 frames per second with 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording. It supports advanced codecs including XAVC S, XAVC HS (HEVC), and All-Intra (XAVC S-I) encoding at bitrates up to 600 Mbps for high-quality footage.
16-bit RAW video output is available via HDMI to compatible external recorders, allowing professional-grade post-production workflows. The camera also supports simultaneous proxy recording to facilitate efficient editing.
Autofocus and Stabilization
The α7S III features a 759-point phase-detection autofocus system combined with 425 contrast-detection points, covering most of the frame for fast and accurate subject tracking. Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking use AI to maintain precise focus on eyes and moving subjects, even with partially obscured faces.
Five-axis optical image stabilization with gyro sensors compensates for yaw, roll, and pitch movements. The new Active Mode enhances stabilization for handheld 4K video shooting without the need for a gimbal.
Color and Gamma Profiles
The camera includes Sony's S-Cinetone color profile for cinematic skin tones and natural mid-range colors, inherited from Sony's Cinema Line cameras. It also supports S-Log3 gamma and S-Gamut3.Cine color gamut for wide dynamic range and smooth color grading in post-production.
Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) enables HDR video production directly in-camera for compatible displays without complex post-processing.
