Optical Design and Performance

The Metabones FD/FL to RF Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x features an advanced 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tantalum-based optical glass developed by Caldwell Photographic in the USA. This design significantly improves corner sharpness, reduces distortion, and minimizes vignetting, delivering extraordinary optical performance across the image frame.

With a magnification factor of 0.71x, the Speed Booster ULTRA effectively reduces the crop factor of mirrorless cameras with APS-C sized sensors (DX format) from 1.5x to approximately 1.07x. This allows full-frame SLR lenses to perform closer to their native field of view on APS-C cameras.

The optical design is optimized for use with virtually all full-frame SLR lenses regardless of exit pupil distance, including professional-grade f/2.8 zoom lenses such as Canon and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms. These lenses are transformed into faster, wider-aperture equivalents (e.g., 17-50mm f/2.0 and 50-142mm f/2.0). High-speed prime lenses like a 50mm f/1.2 become approximately 35.5mm f/0.9 lenses with excellent contrast and resolution from center to edge.
