Optical Design and Performance
The Speed Booster ULTRA features an advanced 5-element/4-group optical design incorporating ultra-high index tantalum-based optical glass, developed by Caldwell Photographic in the USA (patent granted). This design achieves extraordinary optical performance with sharper corners, less distortion, and reduced vignetting compared to previous models.
With a magnification factor of 0.71x, it effectively reduces the crop factor of mirrorless cameras with DX-sized sensors (APS-C), such as Sony E-mount and Fuji X-mount cameras, from 1.5x to approximately 1.07x. The ULTRA design utilizes exotic materials at the forefront of glassmaking technology, allowing excellent correction for use with virtually all full-frame SLR lenses regardless of exit pupil distance.
Lens Compatibility and Aperture Enhancement
This adapter is designed for Canon FD and FL mount lenses to be used on Micro Four Thirds (MFT/M43) mount cameras, including Panasonic, Olympus, and Blackmagic Design MFT-mount cameras.
The Speed Booster ULTRA increases the maximum aperture by 1 stop, enhancing light gathering capability and improving the modulation transfer function (MTF) for sharper images. It also makes the lens 0.71x wider, effectively transforming focal lengths and apertures. For example, professional-grade f/2.8 zoom lenses such as Canon and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 become 17-50mm f/2.0 and 50-142mm f/2.0 high-speed zooms, respectively. Similarly, a 50mm f/1.2 lens is transformed into a 35.5mm f/0.9 lens with excellent contrast and resolution from center to edge.
