Ilford ID-11 Film Developer Powder

ILFORD ID-11 is a high-quality powder developer widely accepted as the standard in many scientific and technical photography fields. It provides an ideal balance of fine grain, sharpness, and tonal rendition. Negatives developed with Ilford ID-11 can be enlarged multiple times. It is suitable for all black and white films processed by manual development.

Preparation Instructions

This package is intended to prepare 5 liters of solution, which can be used as is or diluted at ratios of 1:1 or 1:3 depending on the film type. General guidelines are:

  • For low sensitivity films (ISO 25 - 100), use a weak solution (1:3 dilution).
  • For more sensitive films, use a 1:1 dilution.
  • For films like Delta 3200, use the solution undiluted.

To prepare the developer base, dissolve the contents of packet A (small packet) in warm water (~40°C) equal to 3/4 of the final concentrate volume (about 750 ml per 1 liter). Stir until most powder dissolves, then gradually add powder from packet B (large packet), stirring until fully dissolved. Some grains may remain undissolved, which is normal. Add cold water to reach the final volume and mix. Allow the solution to cool to 20°C before use.

Usage and Storage

  • The prepared solution can be stored in a sealed container.
  • Before use, it can be further diluted 1:1 or 1:3 for single use.
  • Tap water can be used for dilution but should be allowed to stand for a few minutes before use.

For best quality, use fresh developer for each new film. For economy, up to 10 films can be developed in one liter of solution without dilution. Increase development time by 10% for each subsequent film (e.g., first film time t, second t+10%, tenth t+90%). Films with sensitivity above ISO 400 or push processing are not recommended in this case. After each development, pour used solution back into the main container and mix. Discard developer 24 hours after first use regardless of the number of films developed.

Shelf Life

  • Unopened powder: indefinite shelf life at 4°C to 20°C.
  • Prepared undiluted solution stored in a full, airtight container: up to 6 months.
  • Prepared undiluted solution stored in a half-full closed container: 1 month.
  • Diluted solution (1:1 or 1:3): use within 24 hours.
