Product Description
The Caruba Extension Tube set for Nikon includes three extension tubes that can be used individually or combined to achieve greater magnification. These tubes contain no optical elements, allowing you to photograph subjects larger and closer without compromising image quality. They feature a chrome mount and are compatible with Nikon F-mount lenses. Autofocus and TTL light metering functions remain operational, though manual focusing is recommended due to the narrow focus range.
Ideal for Macro Photography
Every lens has a minimum focusing distance. By inserting an extension tube (also known as a spacer ring) between the camera body and lens, this minimum focusing distance is reduced. The longer the extension tube, the closer you can focus, making it ideal for macro photography and detailed close-ups.
How Extension Tubes Work
An extension tube increases the distance between the camera's image sensor and the rear element of the lens. This adjustment shortens the lens's focusing distance, enabling closer focus on subjects. Consequently, the subject is projected larger onto the sensor, increasing the lens's magnification factor. The maximum magnification with an extension tube can be calculated as:
Maximum magnification = lens magnification factor + (extension tube length in mm / lens focal length in mm)
Examples of Magnification Increase
- For an 85mm lens with a magnification factor of 0.13, using the 12mm tube: 0.13 + (12 / 85) = 0.22
- Using the 20mm tube: 0.13 + (20 / 85) = 0.37
- Using the 36mm tube: 0.13 + (36 / 85) = 0.55
- Combining all three tubes (total 68mm): 0.13 + (68 / 85) = 0.93
Note that stacking all three tubes results in approximately a 2-stop loss of light.
