Every lens has a minimum focusing distance. By inserting an extension tube (also known as a spacer ring) between the camera body and the lens, this minimum focusing distance is reduced. The longer the extension tube, the closer you can focus, making it perfect for macro photography and special close-up shots.

How Extension Tubes Work

An extension tube increases the distance between the camera's image sensor and the rear element of the lens. This adjustment shortens the lens's focusing distance, enabling closer focus on the subject. Consequently, the subject is projected larger onto the sensor, increasing the lens's magnification factor. The magnification with an extension tube can be calculated as:

Maximum magnification with spacer ring = lens magnification factor + (extension tube length in mm / lens focal length in mm)

Magnification Examples

• For an 85mm lens with a magnification factor of 0.13:
• With a 12mm extension tube: 0.13 + (12 / 85) = 0.22
• With a 20mm extension tube: 0.13 + (20 / 85) = 0.37
• With a 36mm extension tube: 0.13 + (36 / 85) = 0.55
• Combining all three tubes (total 68mm): 0.13 + (68 / 85) = 0.93

Note: Using all three extension tubes stacked results in approximately a 2-stop loss of light.
