Macro Photography Benefits

Every lens has a minimum focusing distance. By inserting an extension tube (also known as a spacer ring) between the camera body and the lens, this minimum focusing distance is reduced, allowing you to get closer to your subject. The longer the extension tube, the closer you can focus, making these tubes ideal for macro photography and detailed close-up shots.

How Extension Tubes Work

An extension tube increases the distance between the camera's image sensor and the rear element of the lens. This adjustment shortens the lens's focusing distance, enabling closer focus on subjects. Consequently, the subject is projected larger onto the sensor, increasing the magnification factor of the lens. The magnification with an extension tube can be calculated as:

Maximum magnification with spacer ring = lens magnification factor + (extension tube length in mm / lens focal length in mm)

Examples with an 85mm lens (magnification factor 0.13):

• With 12mm extension tube: 0.13 + (12 / 85) = 0.22
• With 20mm extension tube: 0.13 + (20 / 85) = 0.37
• With 36mm extension tube: 0.13 + (36 / 85) = 0.55
• With all three tubes combined (68mm): 0.13 + (68 / 85) = 0.93

Note: Using all three extension tubes stacked results in approximately 2 stops of light loss.
