Lens Range and Versatility
The NiSi Athena Cine lenses cover a focal length range from 14 mm ultra-wide angle to 85 mm, encompassing both ultra-wide and portrait focal lengths. This range provides excellent versatility, making the lenses ideal for various shooting scenarios and enabling capture of diverse subjects.
Optical Performance and Aperture
These lenses feature T-stop ratings that measure the actual light transmission through the lens, ensuring consistent exposure across all focal lengths. The 25 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, and 85 mm lenses have a maximum aperture of T1.9, allowing for a soft bokeh effect and beautiful background separation. The 14 mm lens has a T-stop of T2.4.
Image Circle and Mount Options
The lenses have an impressive image circle diameter of 46 mm, making them suitable for full-frame and even large-format sensors. The Athena Prime series is available in multiple mount options including ARRI PL, Canon RF, Sony E, Panasonic/Leica L, and Fuji G mounts, offering low chromatic aberration and micro-contrast control for superior image quality with fine detail.
Focus Breathing and Mechanical Features
The Athena Prime lenses are engineered to minimize focus breathing, meaning the field of view changes very little when adjusting focus from minimum focus distance to infinity, regardless of aperture setting.
All lenses feature 300° focus rotation and fluorescent focus scales marked in both imperial and metric units for precise focusing. The focus and aperture rings are standardized with 0.8 mod gears across the range, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of follow focus and matte box systems.
Filter System and Compatibility
The series includes a patented rear Drop-In filter system that provides greater flexibility and creative control for filmmakers. For E-Mount lenses, two versions are available: with and without Drop-In filter. This set is the version without the Drop-In filter.
- Note: Sony FX9 cameras cannot use E-Mount lenses with Drop-In filters.
- To achieve infinity focus and sharp images, it is important to use a transparent Drop-In filter for RF, L, G, and E mounts, and a rear filter for PL mounts.
NiSi also offers weather protection for the Drop-In filters.
Weight and Handling
All NiSi Athena Prime lenses have similar weight, allowing lens changes without rebalancing the gimbal. Except for the 14 mm lens, all lenses share a 77 mm filter thread size.
